“What is Hypopigmentation”
Hypo-pigmentation is the loss of skin color.
There are various reasons depicted for it, but the chief one is reduction of melanocytes or melanin. Melanocytes are those skin cells that produce pigment that gives color to the skin. When their number is exhausted, the skin begins to lose its shade.
Another cause attributed to hypo-pigmentation is the diminishing of the amino acid tyrosine.
It is used by the one that melanocytes use to create melanin. In either case, the melanocytes are essential part of the process.
Causes for hypopigmentation
The main causes for hypo-pigmentation are harm or shock to the skin. This comprises blisters, scrapes, burns, pimples, infections or any form of injury that can result in scars.
Even skin rejuvenating treatments can cause damage to the skin and cause hypo-pigmentation.
Kinds of hypo-pigmentation
Many skin disorders can lead to hypo-pigmentation. The causes for the hypo-pigmentation can be classified into different kinds of hypo-pigmentation.
The kinds are –
It is a condition of colorlessness of skin, eyes and hair. The situation occurs when the skin cells discontinues producing melanin, or generate very less of it.
Vitiligo is a skin disorder expressed by white patches on the skin. It is also a type of hypo-pigmentation.
The melanocytes have the main role to play even in this case.
Vitiligo happens as a consequence of loss of the skin cells, or when they stop producing pigment. The reason for the stopping of production is still unknown.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin disorder of inflammatory nature. It appears as itchy, red and scaly as patches on skin. They emerge in areas that are oily in nature.
Tinea versicolor is also a skin disorder that features scaly and itchy patches similar to Seborrheic dermatitis. However their color is lighter than red shade. It is more pinkish. The basis is generally fungal infection.
Pityriasis alba is a hypo-pigmentation that usually affects children. It features colorless, scaly patches of skin.
Treatments for hypo-pigmentation
The treatment choices of hypo-pigmentation are inadequate.
The treatment of the post inflammatory condition is usage of topical creams or topical corticosteroids. Other aspects of treatment are laser skin grafting or surgical skin grafting.
The laser treatments that have been advised and suggested by the doctors and professionals are the Fraxel Restore lasers.
These methods are the only ones which are light based.
In few cases, the dermatologist will suggest prescription medications.
If the skin doesn’t respond well to the medicaments, your dermatologist will suggest permanent makeup or cosmetic tattooing as the case may be.
There are instances where the hypo-pigmentation happens in more than half of the body.
This usually happens with patients who are suffering from Vitiligo. In this situation, doctors and dermatologist advise full and comprehensive de-pigmentation of the body.
Therefore it is seen that Vitiligo is a case of hypo-pigmentation.
It happens when skin cells called melanocytes that produce pigment in the skin, are dead.
Melanocytes are responsible of producing this pigment that gives the skin its color.
If Melanocytes stop functioning or are dead, there is white patch on the skin.
There is no cure for it. Its treatment cannot remove white patches. The affect is life-long. Various treatments can only lighten the appearance of the patches.
